ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The main historical sources have been: The History of the Jews, by Henry Hart Milman (1907), cross-checked against the standard encyclopaedias; the Everyman’s Library edition of The Wars of the Jews, by Josephus; L’Église Naissante, by Pierre Battifol (Paris, 1911); Characters of the Inquisition, by W. T. Walsh (P. J. Kenedy & Son, New York, 1940); A History of Spain, by Rafael Altamira (D. Van Nostrand, New Jersey, 1949); Torquemada by Hope (Allen & Unwin, 1939); Hitler et le Christianisme, by Edmond Vermeil (Gallimard, Paris, 1940); Pogrom, November 10th, 1938, by Lionel Kochan (Andre Deutsch, London, 1957); The War Crimes Trials, vol. II, “The Belsen Trial” (Hodge & Co., 1949); The Jews in the Soviet Union, by Solomon Schwarz (Syracuse University Press, 1951); The Jews in the Soviet Satellites, by Meyer, Weinryb, Duschinsky and Sylvain (Syracuse University Press, 1953).

I am indebted for some of the ideas in the Crusades pogrom to Professor Norman Cohn’s book, The Pursuit of the Millennium; to Dr. Norman Sinsheimer’s book, Shylock (Gollancz, 1947) and the Introduction thereto by John Middleton Murry, for the significance of this characterisation; to Dr. Eva Reichmann’s Hostages of Civilisation (Gollancz, 1950) for some ideas on the social background to the Hitler pogrom; and to Lord Russell’s The Scourge of the Swastika (Cassell & Co., 1954) for the figures of this pogrom.

Though this is a book on pogrom rather than on anti-Semitism and proceeds more by description of major historical phenomena than by sociological research, one feels that for those who welcome scientific analyses of anti-Semitism Dr. James Robb’s analysis of prejudice in Bethnal Green Gentiles would be of considerable value: Working Class Anti-Semite (Tavistock Publications, 1954).

Lastly I express my gratitude to J. R. Walsh, Lecturer in Islamic History at the University of Edinburgh, for his kindness in reading through this book in proof.
